Before you cast off

  1. Weather Wind and waves decide, not the plan. With a small boat only go out on calm days and stay close to land.
  2. Sonar Look for edges, underwater hills and shoals. Start where the bottom drops steeply.
  3. Current Tidal current at sounds and points brings food. The hours with current usually bring the bites.
  4. Birds Gulls circling over the water often mark shoals of saithe or mackerel.

Start zones

Three places to begin

  1. Underwater hill Drift over the top and slopes: saithe often in mid-water, cod on the bottom.
  2. Sound with current While the tide runs, drift across the current.
  3. Deep fjord edge On the steep slope into deep water live ling, tusk and golden redfish, fish natural bait on the bottom there.
Safety first

A life jacket is mandatory on boats up to 8 m. For boats of 8 to 15 m or over 25 hp you need a boating licence if you were born in 1980 or later.
