Perch, October to December
Perch in cold water: deep, slow, small
The shoals move as the water cools. Four signals tell you where.

Read the water
Where did the shoal go?
- Depth Cooling water sends perch from the shallows to the first deep edges.
- Structure Harbour walls, bridge piers, sunken trees, moored boats. Perch love hard cover.
- Baitfish Perch sit under the shoals of small fish. Watch for birds and bait on the sounder.
- Light Dull days fish all day. Bright days: dawn and dusk.
Start zones
Three places to begin
- The first deep drop-off Where the shallow shelf ends. Fish along it, not across it.
- Hard structure Walls, piers and trees in deeper water. Fish tight to it.
- Harbour basins Sheltered, deep and full of food. Often the winter home of the shoal.
Found one perch? Stay. They move as a shoal, fish the spot out before you walk on.
Lure and retrieve
Small and slow
- Drop shot Small soft plastic hanging above the bottom. Let it quiver, barely move it.
- Light jig head Small soft plastic along the bottom, lift and drop, long pauses.
- Small plug or spoon Only when perch chase bait near the surface.
Perch bite carefully in cold water. Feel the tap, lift, do not rip.

Everything here is a rule of thumb from practice, not a guarantee. Lures are named as a group, not as a brand.
In Germany, closed seasons and minimum sizes are set by each state and can be stricter for single waters. All German rules by state, with the legal source. Outside Germany, the local rules apply: licence and agency by country.
