Cod, Norway, November to March
Cod from the rocks: Norway in winter
Deep water close to shore, no licence for rod and reel. Four signals before you climb down.

Read the water
Before you climb down
- Depth Rock faces that drop straight into deep water. Dark water close to shore is what you want.
- Current Tidal flow along points and fjord mouths brings food. Fish the moving water.
- Weather Calm days only. Swell on rocks does not forgive mistakes.
- Light Short days. Fish the middle of the day and the last hour of light.
Start zones
Three places to begin
- Rocky points Current plus depth. Cast along the rock face, not away from it.
- Fjord mouths Cod move with the tide. Fish the turn of the tide.
- Harbour piers Safe, deep and lit. Good for the first evening and bad weather.
No rock without a safe way back up, never alone, and a life jacket is not optional.
Lure and retrieve
Heavy and vertical
- Pilk or heavy jig Drop it along the rock face, lift and let it fall. Bites come on the drop.
- Big soft plastic Slow along the bottom, a few turns, pause, repeat.
- Natural bait Dropper rig with fish strips for the slow hours.
Minimum sizes and export limits exist in Norway. Sea fishing with rod and reel needs no licence.

More fishing tips
Everything here is a rule of thumb from practice, not a guarantee. Lures are named as a group, not as a brand.
In Germany, closed seasons and minimum sizes are set by each state and can be stricter for single waters. All German rules by state, with the legal source. Outside Germany, the local rules apply: licence and agency by country.
