Zander, late October to December

Zander after dark: where the light ends

Three signals, three spots, one slow retrieve. Europe-wide, from the Rhine to the Danube. US anglers: your cousin is the walleye, same tricks after dark.

Zander profile

Read the water

Before the light goes

  1. Light Harbour lamps, bridges, the line where light meets dark. Zander hunt the shadow side.
  2. Current A slow seam behind stones or a groyne. Baitfish rest there, zander wait below.
  3. Bottom Hard, stony or sandy. Soft mud rarely holds feeding zander.
  4. Temperature Cooling water pushes zander deep by day. At night they come up onto the edges.

Start zones

Three places to begin

  1. The light edge Where lamp light ends on the water. Cast into the dark, retrieve through the line.
  2. Stony bank or groyne Current seam plus hard bottom. Fish the downstream side first.
  3. The deep channel Before dusk, start at the drop-off and work up as it gets dark.
Rule of thumb

Start where light meets dark about an hour after sunset. Nothing in 30 minutes? Walk 50 metres along the bank.

Lure and retrieve

Slow is the rule

Bite feels like a tap?

Strike at once. Zander drop a lure as fast as they take it.

Quick questions

When do zander bite at night?

From about an hour after sunset, when they come up from the deep channel onto the edges. Start where lamp light ends on the water.

Which lure for zander after dark?

A soft plastic on a light jig head, slow along the bottom with long pauses. Alternatively a shallow plug fished dead slow, or a dead bait fish on the bottom.

Where in a harbour do I start?

At the light edge, along stony banks or groynes with a current seam, and before dusk at the drop-off of the deep channel.

More fishing tips

Everything here is a rule of thumb from practice, not a guarantee. Lures are named as a group, not as a brand.

Check the rules

In Germany, closed seasons and minimum sizes are set by each state and can be stricter for single waters. All German rules by state, with the legal source. Outside Germany, the local rules apply: licence and agency by country.
