Fishing licence in Austria: what anglers need

Fishing is regulated by the federal states: nine state laws. You normally need a valid fishing card or guest fishing card plus a permit from the holder of the fishing rights for the water. Depending on the state, the card comes from the district authority (Burgenland, Carinthia, Styria, Tyrol) or the state fishing association (Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Vorarlberg).

What about children, teens and seniors?

Each state sets the minimum age for the fishing card: 10 in Carinthia, 12 in Upper Austria and Salzburg, 14 in Burgenland, Lower Austria, Styria, Tyrol and Vienna. Example Tyrol: children under 14 may not fish alone, but may fish alongside a fully licensed supervisor without their own permit if the fishery manager agrees.

What applies to visitors from abroad?

As a visitor you use the guest fishing card instead of the annual card. Example Tyrol: valid 14 days across Tyrol, from age 14, you must show credible proof of competence and carry official photo ID; during that time only day permits are allowed, no annual permits. Residents usually need an exam for their first annual card (a briefing course in Carinthia).

Which catch and take-home rules apply?

Closed seasons, minimum sizes and bans are set by each state, often with extra rules for the water. You must carry your card and permit and show them to fishery wardens on request.
