Do you need a licence for sea fishing in England?

The rod fishing licence only covers salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt and eel. Sea fish are not on that list, so normal sea fishing needs no licence. If you target salmon, sea trout or eel on the coast, the licence applies.

Which catch and take-home rules apply?

On rivers there is a closed season for coarse fish and eel from 15 March to 15 June; most stillwaters and canals are open all year. On rivers you may keep at most 1 pike up to 65 cm, 2 grayling of 30 to 38 cm and 15 small fish up to 20 cm per day. Always release eels (except conger) alive. Release salmon at once before 16 June and use only an artificial fly or lure until then. Sea bass: 3 per day from 42 cm, catch and release only from 1 February to 31 March.

What else should you know?

The licence covers England and Wales and the Border Esk area, including the part in Scotland, but not the River Tweed. Regional byelaws can be stricter, so check at the water. With a salmon licence you must submit a catch return every year, even if you did not fish. You must not sell rod-caught salmon or sea trout.
