Rod pod vs bank sticks: which one and when

Bank sticks push into the ground, while a rod pod stands on its own legs. On soft banks sticks are light and flexible, on stages, concrete, rocks or hard gravel a pod is often the only option.

Bite times for your spot

What you need

Step by step

  1. Check your licence, permit and the fishery rules first. Some waters only allow fishing from designated swims or platforms, which often favours a pod.
  2. Test the ground: if a stick goes in cleanly, bank sticks are usually the better choice. On concrete, wooden stages, rocks or hard gravel where nothing holds, use a pod.
  3. With bank sticks, use a pair per rod and point each rod at its own spot. Fewer angles between rod and line mean better bite indication.
  4. Matching stick lengths keep the rod level. A longer front stick lifts the tip over weed or shallow bars, a shorter one drops it.
  5. In gravel, push the sticks in as deep as you can and check they are truly vertical. Leaning sticks give way on a take.
  6. With a pod, set it down level and firm, adjust the height and check that no fitting slips. Leave enough room between rods to lift one without catching the others.
  7. On a wooden stage, screw on stage stands or use the pod. On concrete and rocky banks the pod is the answer.
  8. Fishing locked up to lilies, roots or branches? Use single bank sticks with butt grips, wind the clutch up tight, point the rod at the snag and never leave the rods.
  9. Take alarms and hangers off before you move, so nothing gets damaged.
Common mistakes
  • Buying a cheap, flimsy pod: it can topple or collapse on a fast run and drag the rod in.
  • Leaving sticks leaning in gravel: they give way on a hard take.
  • Snag fishing off a pod with a loose drag: that job calls for single sticks, butt grips and a clutch wound up tight.
  • Hammering thin-walled sticks into hard ground: they bend, and cheap plastic adjusters break.
  • Fishing widely spread spots from one pod: a pod cannot point rods in different directions, so indication suffers.

Quick answers

Is a rod pod better than bank sticks?

Not in general. On soft ground sticks are lighter, more flexible and let every rod point at its spot. On hard ground and platforms a pod is more stable.

What should I use on a wooden platform?

A rod pod, or stage stands screwed to the boards. Bank sticks will not hold there.

Will bank sticks hold in gravel?

Often only with effort: push them in deep, check they stand vertical and use screw-in points. If the ground will not give, switch to a pod.

How many rods fit on a buzz bar?

Two to four, depending on the bar. How many rods you may fish is set by your licence and the fishery rules.
