Crappie and other panfish

When crappie bite
- Spring spawn. Crappie move shallow to spawn near wood and weeds: the easiest time to catch a lot of them.
- Early morning and night. Crappie feed mostly early in the morning and around midnight, so dawn and night trips pay off.
- Summer and winter. They go deeper on timber, edges and channels. Find the depth they hold at and stay there.
Best time by species
- Crappie: Spring, when fish move shallow to spawn; otherwise around sunken trees, docks and other cover. According to Wikipedia crappie feed mostly early in the morning and around midnight.
- Bluegill: During the spawn from May to August, when males attack anything near the nest; during the day mainly mornings and evenings around weeds and wood (Wikipedia).
- Yellow perch: A daytime schooling fish: schools break up at dusk and reform at dawn, and feeding peaks just before dark (Wikipedia). A favorite target for ice fishing in winter (rule of thumb).

Methods and rigs
Small jigs, cast or fished vertically, and live minnows under a float catch crappie all year. From a boat, spider rigging with several long rods and slow trolling with small crankbaits cover more water.
Jigs and baits by season
- Spring
- Shallow on brush and timber, minnow or jig under a float.
- Summer
- Deeper on timber and edges, vertical with a jig; early and late also shallow.
- Fall
- Back to mid depths and creeks, jig and minnow on timber.
- Winter
- Deep in holes and at bridges, small jigs fished slowly, through the ice only where it is safe and allowed.
Where to fish
- Sunken timber and brush piles
- The classic crappie spot in lakes and reservoirs.
- Docks and bridges
- Shade and structure, good all year and easy to reach.
- Weed edges
- In spring crappie spawn near weeds in shallow water.
- Creek arms
- In fall the schools move into creeks and mid depths.
