Carp and their cousins

When carp feed
- Warm months. Carp feed most when the water is warm. In spring they move first into shallow areas that warm up quickly.
- Dusk, dawn and night. Often the best hours, and in summer carp also feed at the surface during the day.
- Winter. Carp hold sluggishly in deeper water. Fish little bait, small hook baits and be patient.
Best time by species
- Common carp: The warmer half of the year from around 8 °C water temperature, often at dusk and at night; in summer also at the surface.
- Grass carp: Warm summer months; the species likes warmth, its optimum lies at 22 to 26 °C water temperature according to Wikipedia.
- Tench: Dawn and dusk in summer, close to reeds and water lilies.

Methods and rigs
Bottom fishing with a hair rig and a lead is the standard for targeting carp. A method feeder puts loose feed and hook bait in one spot, float fishing works in the margins and shallows, and floating baits catch at the surface in summer.
Baits by season
- Spring
- Shallow, warming areas: sweetcorn and small boilies, little loose feed.
- Summer
- The best time. At night on drop-offs, by day floating baits and pellets.
- Autumn
- Carp feed up for winter: bigger boilies and more feed on deeper spots.
- Winter
- Little feed, small bright pop-ups and corn in deep holes, long waits.
Where to fish
- Lakes and gravel pits
- Warm, rich stillwaters are classic carp waters, many of them run by clubs and fisheries.
- Drop-offs and weed beds
- Carp patrol these edges looking for food.
- Overhanging trees and margins
- Shade and cover close to the bank, in summer often full of fish.
- Bubbles and coloured water
- Feeding carp give themselves away with bubbles and clouded water.
In England and Wales you need a rod licence for carp from age 13, plus a permit for the water. On English rivers coarse fish have a closed season in spring, most stillwaters and canals are open all year. Fishing licence by country
