Rig for perch, zander and bass
Carolina rig: setup, baits and when to use it
On a Carolina rig the weight runs above a swivel and the bait follows freely on a long leader. You cover big areas of bottom with weight while the bait drifts down slowly and naturally.
Guide sections: Learn to fish

When the Carolina rig fits
- Cold water in winter Perch and zander sit sluggish on the bottom. The rig is crawled slowly along the bottom, the bait stays in view for a long time.
- Covering big areas The heavy weight keeps bottom contact even when you drag it quickly. You feel stones, mussels and hard bottom as you go.
- Shallow water and wary fish The bait sinks almost weightless, independent of the sinker. That brings bites when fish sit shallow and avoid heavy lures.
- Long casts from the bank The weight sits above the swivel, so the bait can be light. That way you also reach distant drop-offs and plateaus.
How to build it
- Prepare the main line: thin braid with a length of fluorocarbon in front as a shock piece, so the weight cannot fray the braid. Join them with an Albright or double uni knot.
- Thread on a rubber stop, then the bullet weight. For perch 10 to 20 g (3/8 to 3/4 oz) is usually enough, go heavier with depth and wind.
- Add a bead behind the weight. A rubber bead protects the knot better than glass, with tungsten always use rubber.
- Tie on a small swivel with a clinch knot. It stops weight and bead and keeps the distance to the bait.
- Tie the fluorocarbon leader to the swivel: 30 to 80 cm (12 to 32 in) long, for perch 0.20 to 0.28 mm. 50 cm (20 in) is a good starting point, shorter gives more action.
- Tie on a light-wire offset hook, or for slim soft plastics hooked through the lip a drop shot hook in size 4 to 1/0.
- Rig the bait: craw, creature, worm or shad, with an offset hook bury the point in the plastic. Crawl it slowly along the bottom and pause after every hop.
Variants
- Rubber stops instead of a swivel Two stops hold the weight at a distance that you can slide at any time. Push them all the way to the hook and it becomes a Texas rig.
- Finesse Carolina Thinner lines and small baits for wary perch in clear water. Leader then about 0.17 to 0.21 mm.
- Floating Carolina A floating bait or a float body lifts the bait above weed and mussels. A mono leader also works for this.
- Tungsten instead of lead Smaller for the same weight, and bottom structure comes through more clearly in your hand. Only combine with a rubber bead.
Quick questions
What is the difference between a Carolina rig and a Texas rig?
On a Texas rig the weight sits right at the bait, on a Carolina rig a swivel separates weight and bait, usually by 30 to 80 cm (12 to 32 in). The bait sinks more slowly and moves more freely.
How heavy should a Carolina rig weight be?
For perch usually 10 to 20 g (3/8 to 3/4 oz). In deeper water and wind you can go heavier, as long as you still feel the bottom.
Which baits work on a Carolina rig?
Craws, creatures, soft plastic worms with or without a curly tail, and slim shads. In cold water calm baits without their own action often do better.
