Carp rig for any bottom

Helicopter rig: setup and safe bead release

On a helicopter rig the hooklink spins on a ring swivel around the leader, with the lead at the very bottom. It casts far, rarely tangles and keeps the bait above silt and weed.

How to build it

  1. Choose a leader of 50 to 100 cm (20 to 40 in) in leadcore or lead-free material. Tie or loop it straight to the main line so the bead can slide over the join.
  2. Slide on the top bead. It must release or slide off if the line breaks, so the fish is not left tethered to the lead.
  3. Slide on a ring swivel with an O-ring, about size 8. A standard quick-change swivel can jam.
  4. Below it fit a smaller bead, a rubber sleeve and a quick-change clip. The lead goes on the clip, for a self-hooking effect at least 60 g (about 2 oz), better 80 to 100 g (about 3 to 3.5 oz).
  5. Set the top bead as close to the lead as the bottom allows. Over soft silt push it higher, up to about 1 m (3 ft) above the lead.
  6. Tie a stiff hooklink to the ring swivel: coated braid, or mono and fluorocarbon of 0.50 to 0.60 mm. Soft hooklinks tangle around the leader.
  7. Bait: boilie, sweetcorn, tiger nut, pellet or wafter. After the cast let the line hang slack and fit a light bite indicator.

Quick questions

Why does a helicopter rig hook less well than a fixed lead?

The fish can pull the hooklink some way along the leader before the lead takes effect. So set the top bead as close to the lead as you can and use very sharp hooks.

Where should the top bead go?

As close to the lead as the bottom allows. The softer the bottom and the taller the weed, the higher it goes, up to about 1 m (3 ft) above the lead.

Is a helicopter rig dangerous for carp?

If built wrong, yes: if the line breaks and the bead holds, the fish drags the lead around. Use beads that release and tie the leader directly to the main line.
