How to recognise it

Easily confused with: The cuckoo wrasse (Labrus mixtus) is slimmer and more colourful, males with blue stripes (rule of thumb). In the Mediterranean the brown wrasse (Labrus merula) is similar and often confused with it there (FishBase). Smaller wrasses such as the goldsinny stay much smaller (rule of thumb).

How to catch it

Methods: Light lure fishing with soft plastics around rocks, often catch and release (English Wikipedia), Bottom fishing tight to rock and kelp (rule of thumb), Float fishing along rock ledges (rule of thumb), Strong leader and firm pressure so the fish cannot reach the crevices (rule of thumb)

Baits: Crab (shore or peeler crab), Ragworm, Mussel meat, Small weedless soft plastic, Prawn

In daylight, as the fish are active by day and rest in crevices at night (German Wikipedia); in summer in shallower water around rocks and kelp (rule of thumb).

Habitat and food

Northeast Atlantic from Norway to Morocco including Madeira, the Azores and the Canaries; Mediterranean records are considered doubtful and often refer to the brown wrasse (Labrus merula) (FishBase, English Wikipedia). German Wikipedia, however, includes the western Mediterranean. Lives around rocks, reefs, kelp and seagrass at 1 to 50 m, usually 2 to 30 m (FishBase); juveniles often in the intertidal zone. Active by day, hiding in crevices at night (German Wikipedia).

Crustaceans and molluscs (FishBase, German Wikipedia). The thick lips and sharp front teeth pull shellfish off rocks, throat teeth crush the shells; it also takes hard-shelled crabs and small lobsters (English Wikipedia). Ballan wrasse have no stomach (English Wikipedia).

Size and age

FishBase: max. 65.9 cm (total length), common 50.0 cm (standard length), maximum published weight 4.4 kg, maximum age 34 years. English Wikipedia also gives 34 years, German Wikipedia about 18 years; the sources differ on age. Spotted fish grow larger than plain ones (English Wikipedia).

Protection and rules

Conservation status: IUCN: Least Concern (assessed 2008; FishBase). Not listed in the German coastal regulations: neither Annex 1 KüFVO Schleswig-Holstein nor § 4 KüFVO M-V or § 6 NKüFischO Lower Saxony; no EU rule for anglers (Regulation (EU) 2026/249). Minimum sizes and closed seasons are set by each country and region; checked on 21 Oct 2026. Because the species grows slowly, lives long and changes sex, many anglers release it (English Wikipedia: popular catch-and-release target).

We found no minimum size or closed season for this species in any state fisheries regulation. Local water rules may still apply.

Check the rules

In Germany, closed seasons and minimum sizes are set by each state and can be stricter for single waters. All German rules by state, with the legal source. Outside Germany, the local rules apply: licence and agency by country.

In the kitchen

Eaten in Orkney and Galway, but not highly regarded as a food fish in most of Britain and Ireland (English Wikipedia). In Norway and Scotland it is used and farmed as a cleaner fish against sea lice in salmon farms (English Wikipedia).
