How to recognise it

Easily confused with: Unmistakable with the comb raised; it is the only species in its family (FishBase). With the comb folded it resembles large jacks.

How to catch it

Methods: Live baitfish from the beach or boat (most common method, Wikipedia), Casting poppers and stickbaits from the surf, Fly fishing with a 10-weight or heavier (Wikipedia), Slow trolling baitfish along the surf line

Baits: Live sardine or mullet, Popper, Stickbait, Large streamer or topwater fly

Spawns in the warm months (Wikipedia); in Costa Rica and Panama the dry season from December to April is sold as the main inshore season, in Baja California the summer (rule of thumb from travel offers, not official).

Habitat and food

Eastern Pacific only, from San Clemente in southern California to Peru including the Galapagos, rare north of Baja California (FishBase). Shallow inshore waters, sandy beaches and flats; juveniles in tide pools (FishBase, Wikipedia).

A generalist: stomach contents held nine fish species and one cephalopod, anchovies most often (Wikipedia).

Size and age

FishBase: max. 163 cm, commonly around 60 cm, maximum published weight 51.7 kg. The sources give no maximum age. The average hooked fish weighs about 9 kg; the record fish weighed 51.71 kg (114 lb), La Paz, Mexico, 1960 (Wikipedia, Sport Fishing Magazine; IGFA database not accessed).

Protection and rules

Conservation status: IUCN: Least Concern (2024; FishBase). Catch and release is strongly recommended (Wikipedia). Mexico: at most two roosterfish (pez gallo) per angler per day, reserved for sport fishing within 50 nautical miles (NOM-017-PESC-1994, 2013 amendment). Panama: charter operators state catch and release is mandatory for roosterfish and billfish, but we have no official source.
Rules by country

Size limits, bag limits, seasons and licences are set by each country, in the USA by each state. Pescaday does not list these rules: check them with your operator and the national authority before you fish. Notes with sources are given above under conservation status. Licence pages: Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, USA. Fishing travel guide

In the kitchen

Marketed fresh locally and important to artisanal fisheries (FishBase, Wikipedia). Sport anglers almost always release it.
