How to recognise it

Easily confused with: Young barbel can look like the gudgeon; the gudgeon, however, has only two barbels and rarely grows beyond 15 cm. The carp also has four barbels but is much deeper-bodied.

How to catch it

Methods: Ledgering (bottom fishing), Feeder fishing in the current, Float fishing with a drifting bait, Fly fishing

Baits: Luncheon meat, Pellets, Hemp seed, Maggots, Caddis larva

Mainly at dusk and at night; FishBase describes adult barbel as most active at dusk and dawn.

Habitat and food

Oxygen-rich rivers with a sandy or gravelly bed, the barbel zone named after it; occasionally also in lakes. It lives in groups near the bottom and overwinters in large shoals in calm river sections.

Bottom-living animals such as small crustaceans, insect larvae and molluscs, plus small fish and sometimes algae; it searches for food by day and by night.

Size and age

Usually 25 to 75 cm, in exceptional cases up to one metre (Wikipedia). FishBase: max. 120 cm, heaviest published weight 12.0 kg, maximum age 15 years.

Protection and rules

Conservation status: German Red List (freshwater fish 2023): early warning list (Vorwarnliste), in 2009 still not threatened; Germany bears a high responsibility for its global conservation. IUCN: not threatened (Least Concern, 2022).

Warning: the roe and the belly meat around it are inedible and cause nausea, whether raw or cooked. Barbel cope badly out of the water and should be returned quickly and gently when released (English Wikipedia).
